Plant Heritage

Every plant has a history.  We honor the heritage of these plants and the people who first understood their gifts with curiosity, gratitude, and respect.

Calendula

In medieval Europe, calendula was often called Mary’s Gold, or Mary-gold, in honor of the Virgin Mary. Its luminous golden flowers were associated with devotion, protection, and gentle care. Over time, Mary-gold evolved into the familiar name we know today: marigold.

Jojoba

For generations, Indigenous peoples of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico treasured jojoba as a form of “liquid gold.” Its rich, nourishing oil was traditionally used to condition hair, soothe skin, and support the body’s natural healing processes. Modern skincare still celebrates jojoba for many of the same reasons.

Rosehips

Long before rosehips found their way into modern skincare, the wild rose earned the name Dog Rose (Rosa canina). Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder once promoted the plant as a remedy for mad dog bites, giving this resilient rose its unforgettable botanical name. Today, we’re more likely to reach for rosehips to support radiant, healthy-looking skin than to fend off rabid pups.

Sweet Almond Oil

Recorded in early Ayurvedic and Middle Eastern text scrolls, sweet almond oil was historically revered as “The Skin Nectar” due to its unique ability to deeply feed and revive dry skin tissue. Because the sweet almond tree is the very first to blossom at winter's end, ancient cultures viewed its nectar as a magical shield of rebirth.
